Small cells, big business


What was touted as the ‘must-attend mobile telecommunications event of 2016’, just concluded with much aplomb. It set the tone for what the newest innovations in the fascinating world of small cells will be, and what trends to look forward to in this niche area. The much-awaited SCWS World was held at Intercontinental O2 Hotel, London, from 10 to 12 May 2016, and Aricent was a Sponsor at this prestigious event.

SCWS World holds the distinction of being the only small cell focused event exclusively endorsed by the Small Cell Forum. This year, the theme was Commercialising the Mobile Edge. Small Cells, Wi-Fi, DAS and HetNet were the hot topics of discussion, with content focus on Commercializing the HetNet, Host Neutral and Shared Access, Path to 5G, IoT and Smart Cities, HetNet Deployment, Data Monetization, and Enterprise Communications.

SCWS World brought together experts from across the globe and provided them with the opportunity to showcase their perspectives on what’s making a buzz in the industry, and share valuable experiences relating to their organization. It created a space for key industry players to launch innovative products in the small cells area. While it was aimed at the mobile operator and end-user community, the event saw senior management, engineers and senior managers from across companies gaining insights into the strategic and technology partners that will be the best fit for their organizations, and making the most of the networking opportunities.

The CTO panel debates, executive roundtables, show floor demos, seminars centred around topical issues, end user seminar programmes, and interesting case studies revolving around the trial and deployment experiences of operators, were not to be missed. The new detailed seminars that explored topics such as Neutral Host, SON, LTE & Wi-Fi integration, Backhaul, HetNet Enablement, Indoor opportunities, LTE-U and LAA, were a hit with visitors.

Aricent at SCWS World

At the event, Aricent got the opportunity to interface with over a 1000 senior representatives from operators, vendors, and end-users and indulge in open discussions related to the right access technology for networks and consumers. We demonstrated our offerings for Neutral Host Small Cell, WiGig, and ‘LTE in a Box’ solution.

About the demos

Cloud-Managed Neutral Host Small Cell: The demo showcased our offering for Neutral Host Small Cell with multi-PLMN support in Aricent’s eNodeB software framework. It is a cloud-managed solution that uses Aricent’s HeNBGW, EPC and IMS Core with eNodeBs hosted on Intel and Broadcom SoCs.

WiGig: We demonstrated WiGig (IEEE 801.11ad) usage, use Qualcomm QCA63XX chipsets, with focus on the capability of near zero packet loss at a very high bandwidth usage.

‘LTE in a Box’ Solution: We showcased the ability to setup an ad hoc LTE network with multiple radios based upon a common virtualized platform for the RAN and the core network. The 'LTE in a Box' helps extend the cellular coverage for priority events such as a disaster response.

Sanjiv Kapur, AVP - Product Management, Aricent participated in a panel discussion on ‘Defining how LTE and Wi-Fi will co-exist (LTE-U, LAA, LWA)' on Tuesday, 10 May, at the conference. The other panel speakers included Benoit Graves, Head of Radio Access Network Strategy, Orange, and Art King, Director of Enterprise Services and Technologies, Spidercloud. Simon Fletcher, CTO, Real Wireless, played the role of the moderator.
